Oil Information Guide

What is the right oil for my car?

This is a question that we get regularly asked. The simple answer is that you should refer to your vehicle handbook and this will give you the correct oil specification for your vehicle. It is important that you use the correct oil for your vehicle, as to not do so could result in costly damage to your engine.

How to check the oil level of the vehicle.

  • Ensure engine is cool and the vehicle has been stationary for a while.
  • Withdraw dipstick and wipe clean with tissue to ensure a clear reading.
  • Insert dipstick and withdraw slowly and smoothly.
  • Check oil level line against minimum and maximum lines on dipstick - oil level should be between the two. If level is below or close to minimum line, top up.
  • Alternatively your vehicle may not have a dipstick which case you should be able to check the vehicles oil level using the vehicles onboard computer.

Caution

Be careful not to overfill your car with oil - always fill a little at a time, using a jug or funnel. Allow the oil to gather in the sump and check the level again before checking and adding more if needed. Overfilling could cause the following problems:

  • Serious damage to main crankshaft seals.
  • Oil spilling on to clutch
  • Damage to catalytic converter
